In Our Time of Knowing
Student Poem Anthology
Emerging from the global pandemic of 2020, the students of Harlem Junior/Senior High School in North Montana found an outlet with poetry. In Our Time of Knowing represents one full school year of writing poems and collecting them. The students explore themes of loneliness and brokenness, but they also process the events of the last few years with joy and optimism, sometimes approaching one another with response poems and satire-styled poems about daily happenings at the small school. They attempt a variety of writing modes from Japanese tanka poems to sonnets and other experimental forms. In reading In Our Time of Knowing, you will see glimpses of life in North Montana, and learn about what life is like near the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, particularly among its young people.
